  1. #1 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaNew York UniversityNew York, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.76 out of 5 5,778 reviewsJunior: NYU offers many academic opportunities, and the city is brimming with possibilities for fun and career growth. The support from academic advisors can vary depending on your school within NYU, but Stern, in particular, has outstanding advisors. There’s nothing like having Washington Square Park as your 'campus,' but if you're seeking a traditional college experience with Greek life and a strong sense of community, NYU might not be the best fit. NYU's professors can be incredible—supportive both in and out of the classroom, offering extra resources, and serving as inspirations. However, I've encountered a few who were less than ideal: not as understanding, occasionally rude, intimidating, or with high expectations without clear guidance. Ultimately, your experience at NYU is what you make of it. Whether you choose to get involved and build a support system or end up isolating yourself, the opportunities for success are there—but they require internal motivation and effort.... 2. #2 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaYale UniversityNew Haven, CT·4 Year·Rating 4.04 out of 5 1,064 reviewsSenior: Aside from the obvious (great academics and professors), there are just so many great resources and opportunities available at Yale. Unfortunately, you don't get any guidance or help accessing them, which makes the already wide gap for first-gen and low-income students even wider despite generous need-based financial aid packages. Also, the university administration is extremely out of touch with the students, and the YPD abuses their power on unparalleled levels both on campus and in the city. The students at Yale are not very socioeconomically diverse (as one would expect) but for the most part very kind despite the prevailing culture of "maximizing how much work you have to do." The food is better than any other college food I've tasted. Unfortunately, most dorms don't have A/C. The surrounding city of New Haven is wonderful, especially once you've exited the radius where shops upcharge you. Student activism continues to make Yale a better place, e.g., improving mental healthcare.... 3. #3 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaUniversity of Southern CaliforniaLos Angeles, CA·4 Year·Rating 3.99 out of 5 4,087 reviewsGraduate Student: I'm in my second year of the Master of Public Health Program at USC. I originally applied to see if I could get in, and to my surprise, I did. My experience at USC has been incredible! The university welcomes new students, and the sense of community has been my favorite part. Whenever I wear USC gear, people often ask if I attend, if I'm a fan, and some even cheer, "Fight on!" I’ve cherished every moment on campus, and I still find it hard to believe that I have the privilege of being a student here. Although I didn't complete my undergraduate degree at USC, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive, from orientation to spending time with my cohort and attending football games. I'm incredibly proud to be a Trojan, and I hope to one day work for USC. I would only change the connection between the medical campus (HSC) and the main campus (UPC). For students at HSC, it's a bit more challenging to attend events, and there aren't as many held at HSC.... 5. #4 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaDartmouth CollegeHanover, NH·4 Year·Rating 3.88 out of 5 751 reviewsAlum: At Dartmouth, undergraduates enjoy the best of both worlds: the supportive, tight-knit environment of a small liberal arts college AND the top-tier resources and opportunities of a larger research institution. If you're undecided about your major, Dartmouth is an ideal choice because you may take classes across any department, including engineering, without needing to go through any administrative hoops or separate admissions processes — a freedom that many schools don't offer.Like many top-tier universities, Dartmouth’s professors are involved in cutting-edge research. However, what sets Dartmouth apart is its faculty’s commitment to students. In the Engineering Department, for example, professors often offer six hours of office hours per week (even if there are only four students in the class)! This abundance of 1-on-1 support not only enriches one's experience with learning course material, but also allows students to forge strong working relationships with professors.... You don't interact much with the other disciplined schools unless you reach out. There are a few rare social events like house parties or campus stuff but not much. Small student population, so you pretty much find your group of people and stick with them. The film school in particular is going through some changes because of lack of funding, but hopefully it will push us towards stronger storytelling skills, which many of the past films seem to lack. I thought that the school challenged me strongly and prepared me well for post-college life. The curriculum was thoughtful and the range of classes to take outside of my major was diverse. The campus is beautiful and well-maintained and easy to get around. Given the location, the school takes security very seriously and the UCPD is well-versed in the neighborhood and addresses it accordingly. This is a school where it is easy to find the connections to experience new things, as well as get involved on campus (something I highly recommend). As a student who lived on campus for two years, I can confidently say that the UCLA dining halls is some of the best college dining food you will ever find, and there are plenty of health options. Academics are rigorous, but they will prepare you well for any endeavors you might have after undergrad. My complaints about this school are that you are completely on your own to figure out course scheduling, and don't receive much help from counselors. Classes are often hard to get into, which can be extremely frustrating. Lastly, academic or research-focused club participation often requires an application and even an interview, making this school highly competitive for literally everything!... The campus is beautiful and relatively safe. The staff is friendly, intellectual, and encourages creative thinking. In regard to academic programs, the University of Pennsylvania has world-renowned options, particularly in nursing and business (the Wharton school). One unique aspect of the University of Pennsylvania is its commitment to diverse populations and perspectives. Our freshman class this year has students from over 100 countries, bringing a variety of cultures and languages to the community at Penn. The University of Pennsylvania has a very selective admissions process but once accepted, the university is very welcoming and cares about the wellness of its students. The university has a very political atmosphere and can tend to relate narrow viewpoints related to political issues. I think there are a lot of really great people at Emory, however, I do believe there's an issue with how academics and success are viewed among students, which can create a slightly toxic or superficial learning environment. Many try to collect as many accolades as they can but they aren't invested in what they do or what they learn; it feels more like a means to an end to build a prestigious career, which I feel is underutilizing the really great educational resources that are present at Emory.... 13. #11 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaWesleyan UniversityMiddletown, CT·4 Year·Rating 3.8 out of 5 757 reviewsSophom*ore: Wesleyan University is an amazing school. The people here are all passionate about something and are incredibly driven towards their goals. You will see people on campus filming short films, dancing in three different groups at the same time, and people tutoring in the writing center, local schools, and more. The professors are all incredibly knowledgeable and understanding, so I have enjoyed all my classes, even those unrelated to my major. Middletown is just a regular suburban town, but compared to the other NESCACs, it's one of the more fun towns/places. Also, in case you are on financial aid, you will get a nice amount of aid (this was my cheapest option!). There is always stuff to do on campus, whether it is a movie night at the film center, dances and concerts, or a party! It's literally just the Goldilocks school. The diverse and inclusive campus community enriches the student experience, supported by numerous cultural clubs, advocacy groups, and resources. However, there are areas that could be improved. The cost and availability of housing in Irvine can be challenging. Parking on campus is also a concern due to high fees and limited spaces, particularly during peak hours. However, student life was wonderful and there were so many activities, opportunities, and resources on campus. The student housing and food options were all fantastic. I loved the campus feel paired up with its proximity to Boston, and have to say, having transferred from Bowdoin College (another elite but smaller liberal arts school), while there are schools that are more scenic and have larger endowments, the acceptance you get at Tufts combined with the many opportunities available given it’s both a research institution and yet smaller liberal arts type college, really outweighed the perfect dorms, food, and aesthetics for me. 24. #22 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaVanderbilt UniversityNashville, TN·4 Year·Rating 4.02 out of 5 1,359 reviewsSenior: I have overall had a great experience with Vanderbilt University, and I am truly sad that it is my last year coming up in the fall. I think that community is something that Vanderbilt does well, as everyone is so collaborative and kind! I think what needs to change is the Chancellor's office needs to hear student voices. Often times, his office makes really weird and sometimes dumb decisions without considering what it will look like for students, and it is really frustrating to not have our voices heard and listened to.... 25. #23 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaWellesley CollegeWellesley, MA·4 Year·Rating 3.77 out of 5 638 reviewsSophom*ore: I really love it here and am glad that I decided on Wellesley! I'm class of 2026, so I've been on campus for about two years now and each year, I've been able to meet some of the best professors and even better people. Conversations with peers are just as nuanced as the people and although the campus could still do with some diversity, I think we're definitely on the better end (I say this as a half Black and half-Asian student from a very predominantly white town). I've found that it's really easy to make friends because the campus and class sizes are so small (that being said, I'm also more extroverted). However, even my more introverted friends have said that they were eventually able to find close friends as their first or second year progressed -- the key is to be involved in campus or go to events and intentionally talk to people and reach out.... 26. #24 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaMinneapolis College of Art and DesignMinneapolis, MN·4 Year·Rating 3.78 out of 5 267 reviewsSophom*ore: I enjoyed my experience for the first year, however there are some ups and down from my first year. The classes are mixed because most of the professors are nice, however a few of them are very passive agressive and rude. the people there are nice and chill, but some of them act like their still in high school, acting very two faced and will talk about you behind your back. the neighborhood within the school can be unsafe at night, having a few incidents within the school year regarding safety. make sure you are with others when traveling or having a self-defence idem with you. housing is good, but a few of the dorms are not the greatest. Social life here can be very dim, not having a whole ton of events throughout the year. idems and the price for tuition can be very pricy without any financial aid. Overall, not a bad school but not the greatest, at mcad to persue an art degree... 27. #25 Best Colleges for Film and Photography in AmericaCollege for Creative StudiesDetroit, MI·4 Year·Rating 3.69 out of 5 605 reviewsJunior: I'm speaking as a commuter, my overall experience with CCS has been great! The professors there are very knowledgable and they really want to see their students reach great goals! The things I've learned from them have been super valuable and inspiring, and I appreciate their help when trying to get through the semester. CCS is very great when it comes to presenting fun challenges, events and internships that will help build your artistic skills and portfolio. Food and work spaces are available for 24 hours just in case you see yourself working late. The campuses are small with a calm environment for those who prefer a quick route to classes/ parking garages and a quieter atmosphere. I do wish however, that there was a way to get information easier when wanting to know which offices I should visit for certain info, papers, etc. For example, It was a bit tricky at times finding who I should see regarding parking passes. But In the end, I'd say my experience at CCS is excellent!...
